How To Make Honey Mustard That Tastes Better Than Store Bought

My History with Honey Mustard

The other night, my boys were sitting at the table with a plate of chicken strips and fries. Despite making most of our meals from scratch, and maybe one day I will be one of those moms who make homemade chicken strips, that night was not one of those nights. Frozen and from a bag it was. But then I realized, I can still add a homemade touch to this. And I thought, how hard could their favourite dip, honey mustard, be to make? Wasn’t it literally just honey and mustard? So, with literally just a stainless steel bowl (here are some of my favourites!) and a fork, I whisked together ingredients already in my fridge and spices already on my counter. They dipped, they giggled, and they actually ate every bite. If youโ€™re a mom of picky toddlers, youโ€™ll know thatโ€™s a small miracle. (If you havenโ€™t read it yet, I share more about how I navigate meals with picky toddlers here.)

Thatโ€™s when it hit me again (and why I’m sharing on the blog) โ€” why do we keep buying store-bought dips when homemade is this easy, this tasty, and this much better for our wellness?

Here is how you can make your own homemade honey mustard dipping sauce with just 7 ingredients I bet you already have.

Homemade vs Store-Bought Honey Mustard

Store-bought honey mustard often comes with preservatives, added sugars, and that slightly artificial tang that just doesnโ€™t feel like real food. Homemade, on the other hand, is creamy, tangy, and sweet in the best way. You can taste the freshness, and you know exactly whatโ€™s going into it. And, it’s so good, it’s literally drinkable. You laugh now, but you’ll see.

For me, making it at home isnโ€™t just about taste. Itโ€™s about Glow. Like always. Intentional living. Choosing the version that supports my kidsโ€™ health and my peace of mind. And honestly, when something this good takes only a few minutes, thereโ€™s no excuse not to. I can honestly say I will never buy store bought honey mustard again.

The Little Secret Ingredient in Homemade Honey Mustard

Hereโ€™s where my recipe gets special. Paprika. The recipe might specify just how much, but I measure with my heart. Add just enough to give it that warm depth of flavour without overpowering the sweetness of the honey or the tang of the mustard. And if you want to mix things up, try swapping yellow mustard for Dijon. It makes the dip just a little fancier, perfect for date night at home or when you want to wow your guests at appie night.

How to Use Homemade Honey Mustard: Kid-Friendly and Guest-Pleasing

This honey mustard is such a great addition to appie night:

  • For kids: chicken nuggets, fries, or even veggie sticks. (Trust me, it helps with picky eaters.)
  • For guests: set it out next to mozza sticks with homemade pizza sauce and a side of homemade ranch. Instant hit.

Honestly, it never lasts long enough in our house to store, but if you do make extra, it will keep in the fridge for a few days.

Such A Simple Step Toward Glow Living

Making dips from scratch might seem small, but itโ€™s these everyday choices that create rhythm in motherhood. It was actually one of the first things I committed to making from scratch — dressings, dips and sauces. Itโ€™s how we go from chaos to calm in the kitchen, from exhaustion to energy, from surviving meals to actually enjoying them.

If youโ€™ve been wanting to ditch store-bought sauces and take a step toward non-toxic, intentional living, this is a great place to start. And if you want more practical tips like this, donโ€™t forget you can subscribe to Letโ€™s Glow for easy recipes, wellness tips for moms, and exclusive discounts from my favourite Canadian brands.

Another Glow Encouragement

Like I always remind you, motherhood and intentional living isnโ€™t about doing it all. Like I said above, often this recipe is just a homemade touch to compliment a premade, frozen dinner. Because some nights, that is what has to happen. Itโ€™s about doing the small things that add upโ€”like stirring honey into mustard and creating something that makes your kids smile at the dinner table. This homemade honey mustard is proof that wellness and simplicity can go hand in hand!
