How to start your morning with calm, clarity, and intention, even in busy motherhood
If your mornings constantly feel rushed, chaotic and overwhelming, you are not alone. These 3 simple hacks to add to your mornings will help you feel calm, gain clarity, and feel in control of your day, even when the day ahead is busy.
There was a season of my life where mornings felt like I was already behind before my feet hit the floor. And it definitely still happens. My coffee is rushed. The day is loud. The clutter is overwhelming. The kids need everything, all at once, right away. And somewhere between the dishwasher beeping, the dog barking, and a toys crashing down on the floor, my nervous system was already done for the day (before 7 am).
I realized that if I let this be my mornings, the whole day would descend into chaos and I would be in survival mode. I realized that just a few morning habits can help me stay in stillness and calm to start my day and help me carry it through until bedtime.
That’s when I stopped trying to “optimize” my mornings and instead focused on a few intentional habits that help me feel grounded and in control. Not perfect or pretty. Just functional and grounding.
In this post:
Why Morning Habits Matter in Motherhood
When you’re caring for kids, especially young ones, mornings can feel reactive instead of intentional. You’re responding to everyone else’s needs before you’ve even had a moment to check in with yourself or even take a breath.
Morning habits don’t need to be long (no 12 step morning routines) to be supportive. They just need to do one thing well… They need to remind your brain that you are in control of your day, not your to-do list or your kids.
3 Morning Habits to Gain Control of Your Day
1. Sit in Stillness for at Least 10 Minutes
This is the most important part of my morning habits, and also the one that felt the hardest to adopt.
Before my phone. Before work. Before the noise. Before the mental checklist starts running.
I sit.
Sometimes with my coffee. Sometimes with a blanket. Often in silence. Sometimes with grounding music (read about my top grounding Spotify playlists here). Sometimes (for me) a short devotional or prayer. Sometimes with nothing at all. Just silence. And if it’s warm enough, sitting in the sunshine is perfect.
This two minute morning journal from Amazon will help you prioritize your day and focus on gratitude to carry a positive mindset with you through your day.
What I’ve noticed over time is this. Whatever I give my attention to first thing in the morning tends to anchor my mindset for the entire day and control my thought processes.
When I scroll, my mind races. When I blog, the mental checklist starts growing. When I rush, my body stays tense.
But when I sit in stillness, my thoughts slow down.
This doesn’t mean my day is suddenly easy. It just means I start from a place of presence instead of panic.
If you’re new to this, start small.
- Sit somewhere quiet
- Set a 10 minute timer (it will be hard at first)
- Breathe
- Let your thoughts come and go without grabbing onto them
Whatever you are anxious to start, I promise you: it can wait.
This may support your overall sense of wellness by giving your nervous system a chance to settle before the demands of motherhood (or work, or both) begin.
2. Unload the Dishwasher
This one seems almost too simple, but it’s one of the most effective homemaking habits I’ve ever adopted.
When the dishwasher is unloaded first thing in the morning, everything flows better.
- Clean dishes are easy to grab
- Dirty dishes go straight in throughout the day
- Counters stay clearer
- The sink doesn’t pile up by noon
It’s a small act, but it removes mess from your entire day.
Reducing that visual and sometimes physical clutter in one of the busiest hubs of the home, the kitchen, can help you feel calmer throughout the day.
This is one of those habits that doesn’t just help your housekeeping. It helps your mind.
3. Clear the Countertops
I try to do this as part of my evening reset, but life with kids doesn’t always cooperate. Sometimes I am “off” immediately after bedtime, and that’s okay.
But when the counters are cluttered in the morning, I feel like I’m already behind. When they’re clear, I feel like I can breathe.
Working around yesterday’s mess creates mental noise. It makes even simple tasks feel heavier. Some days it makes me down right angry. (Mom rage anyone?)
So if it didn’t happen the night before, this becomes a non negotiable part of my morning routine.
I don’t deep clean. I just walk around the house and clear.
- Put things back where they belong (or even just in a basket and put away where I can’t see them)
- Wipe the surface quickly
- Create visual calm
Visual clutter often translates into mental clutter, especially for moms carrying a heavy mental load.
A clear counter or coffee table doesn’t mean a perfect home. It means a home that’s working with you, not against you. If we reframe it as function and not just “a chore”, sometimes that is all we need.
How These Morning Habits Create Control Over Your Day
These three habits can take less than 20 minutes combined, but they change the tone of your entire day. They work whether you are:
- Running errands
- Taking kids to school or daycare
- Homeschooling
- Working from home
- Staying home with little ones
They’re flexible. They’re grounding. And they meet you where you are. This is what intentional motherhood looks like. Not doing more. Just doing the right things first.
Gentle Wellness You Can Add Later
Once these habits feel natural, you can layer in additional wellness (if they feel supportive to you).
For me, that looks like:
- Soft music in the background
- Calming scents in an essential oil diffuser
- Choosing clean products I’m mindful of using around my home and family

A Gentle Morning Glow Encouragement Before You Go
You don’t need a perfect morning routine to have a good day. More importantly, a perfect morning routine won’t give you a perfect day. But it can ground you, calm you, and tell your nervous system you are safe, giving you a foundation to lean on throughout the day.
You just need one or two intentional choices that remind you that you matter too.
Motherhood is loud. Life is full. But you are allowed to begin your day with calm. Start small. Protect your mornings.
