Create Cozy Christmas Memories With Non-Toxic Scents and Intentional Homemaking

The Power of Scent and Memory
Every December, something happens to me that I can’t quite explain. I’ll walk into a store, catch the faintest whiff of cinnamon and pine, and suddenly I’m a little girl again, sitting on the floor in my parents’ living room on Christmas morning, listening to Celine Dion’s Christmas CD, surrounded by wrapping paper and cinnamon buns. The smell alone can transport me twenty plus years back in time — long before I had my own home or little boys to bake with.
That’s because scent is the most powerful memory trigger we have. The nose connects directly to the hippocampus and amygdala — the parts of the brain that store memory and emotion. Smell isn’t just about the air in your home, it’s about the atmosphere you create for your family. The memories that will one day come flooding back to them when they’re grown.
That’s why, every year and especially this year, I’m ditching the artificial plug-ins and holiday sprays. I want my boys to remember the smell of real Christmas — cinnamon simmering on the stove, bread baking in the oven, fresh pine from the trees, and a home that truly feels warm and alive. You might like this post here about managing your mental health during the holiday season, too.
Here’s five easy, non-toxic ways how to make your home smell like the holidays naturally — without the artificial fragrances.

1. Start With a Classic Christmas Simmer Pot
If there’s one scent that instantly transforms a space, it’s a simmer pot bubbling on the stove. No diffuser or scented candle in the world can mimic the smell and atmosphere that a simmer pot creates. The steam carries warmth through every corner of your home.
Try this simple holiday simmer pot recipe:
- 2–3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tablespoon cloves
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 lemon (sliced)
- Optional: 1 orange, a few pieces of fresh ginger, or a handful of pine needles
Add everything to a pot of water and let it simmer on low heat. Keep refilling the water as it evaporates throughout the day.

2. Essential Oils for Natural Christmas Scents
One of my favourite parts of the season is diffusing essential oils. This year I discovered The Olfactory Shop and their Holiday blend, and to say I’m obsessed is an understatement. They are a Canadian small business that makes pure essential oils I trust (these are not affiliate links, I just truly love this company and want to share!). This blend literally smells like walking into a forest after fresh snowfall, if the tree trunks were made from cinnamon and other holiday spices.
You can also try make your own blend using these festive oils:
- Sweet Orange – bright and cheerful
- Clove – spicy and nostalgic
- Cinnamon Bark – cozy and grounding
- Pine or Spruce – crisp and fresh
- Vanilla – soft and comforting
Add 4–5 drops of each to your diffuser with water. I love diffusing the holiday blend in the morning while I drink my hot oat milk latte from my Christmas mug, when I’m cleaning (using my 26-week chore list!) or during quiet evenings after the kids go to bed and I’m watching a cheesy Hallmark movie.

3. Bake Your Way to a Warm Christmas
Few things beat the smell of fresh cookies or homemade bread coming out of the oven. Baking isn’t just about food! It’s the smell, the intention, and sometimes the memories of letting your little ones help, even if it means you spend twice as much time cleaning up. I made these homemade gingersnap cookies with my four year old, and he may have loved the experience more than the actual cookies!
4. Choose a Real Christmas Tree (or Fresh Greenery)
If you can, get a real Christmas tree this year. The smell of pine, cedar, and fir instantly brings that forest-fresh scent indoors.
For smaller spaces or low-maintenance options, add fresh garlands or eucalyptus sprigs around mirrors and shelves. You’ll still get that natural scent without the full tree commitment. This is the route I take, since I prefer our artificial tree.
Christmas Glow Tip: mist them daily with water to keep them fresh longer (and avoid a fire hazard if you are decorating with lights!)

5. Clean Homes Smell Better (Without Chemical Sprays)
And this may be the hardest part, but no amount of simmer pots, diffusers, baking, or greenery can mask a dirty sink or overflowing garbage bin. The truth is, the cleanest homes are the best-smelling ones.
The biggest odour sources are usually:
- Kitchen sinks and garbages
- Linens, towels, and throw blankets
- Floors and walls that trap mustiness
- Litter boxes, if you have cats
Once you’ve done your regular vacuum, do a quick mop using this natural mix:
- Warm water
- ½ cup white vinegar
- 10 drops essential oils (like the Holiday Blend!)
Use this mixture to wipe down baseboards and even walls in high-traffic areas for that just-cleaned freshness.
For a natural fabric deodorizer, mix a spray bottle with 1 part water and 1 part isopropyl alcohol and add 40 drops of essential oils. Spray this on rugs, curtains, throw pillows, and more for a quick, bacteria-killing air and fabric freshener. The alcohol will do its job and evaporate, leaving just the smell of the oils behind.

A Bonus Tip: Fresh Air is the Simplest, Most Overlooked Secret
Lastly, crack open a few windows. Even in the Canadian winter, a few minutes of fresh air (and sunshine!) can clear out stale odours and bring in that crisp, invigorating feeling. (Just don’t tell your husband you read that tip here!) It’s a small act of intentional living that I love, one that reminds us that our homes need to breathe, just like we do.
