The word “freedom” has been on my mind lately. Not because of headlines, but because of how much that word has come to mean to me in this season of motherhood.
But what does that really mean? To me, in my life right now as a mom, a homemaker, a woman trying to live with intention?
At first, my mind went to the big things: freedom of speech, freedom of faith, the freedom to raise my children in the way I believe is best. But then I started thinking about freedom on a much smaller scale too. Freedom in my daily rhythms. Freedom in the choices I make for my family’s health. Freedom in how I spend my time and earn money. Freedom in how I order my home.
And I realized something. Freedom is both fundamental and personal.
Freedom That is Fundamental
I don’t take lightly the fact that I can write and share openly about my faith. That I can run my business online and connect with moms across the world. That I can choose to stay home with my boys, homeschooling and building a family-centered life. That I can wear and say what I want.
These freedoms are precious. They allow me to live out the values that matter most to me. They make space for me to create a life filled with rhythms of peace instead of chaos, MY WAY.
But freedom is more than a right to protect. It is written in the Word of God and woven into the nature of the universe itself. Scripture reminds us, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1). Freedom is something that already exists, something eternal, but also something we have to safeguard through the choices we make each day.
Freedom That is Personal
Here’s the thing. I can have the freedom to earn money how I choose, but if I overspend or make poor financial decisions, I could easily end up stuck in a situation where that freedom feels gone.
I can have the freedom to order my home how I want, but if I neglect daily resets, clutter and stress pile up until I no longer feel free in my own space.
I can have the freedom to eat how I like, but if I constantly turn to sugar or caffeine, my energy crashes and anxiety take over.
The truth is, freedom without discipline quickly turns to chaos. It’s like letting a toddler loose in a candy store. It might feel exciting for a moment, but without guardrails it ends in overwhelm, stomachaches, and tears.
Like a proper boy mom, I will leave this quote (Bonus points if you know where it’s from): “With great power comes great responsibility.” … But change it a little bit.
“With great freedom, comes great responsibility.”
When I think about freedom this way, I see discipline not as a restriction, but as the very thing that allows me to actually live free. My cleaning rhythms give me freedom from the weight of mess. My morning devotions give me freedom from starting my day in chaos. My healthy choices give me freedom from fatigue and brain fog.
Freedom and discipline go hand in hand. Without one, the other crumbles.
How Freedom Looks in My Motherhood
For me, on a seemingly small scale, freedom looks like:
- Having rhythms in place so my boys know what to expect.
- Choosing to be present with them instead of endlessly scrolling.
- Saying yes to structure so we can all rest easier (or at least trying to).
- Leaning on routines, like my weekly cleaning schedule, so I don’t feel buried under tasks.
- Saying yes to healthier choices so my energy stays steady.
It also looks like the freedom to rest.
Freedom doesn’t mean no boundaries. It means choosing the right ones so my life stays aligned with what matters most.
What Does Freedom Mean To You?
So I’ll leave you with the same question I’ve been asking myself: What does freedom mean to you?
Whatever it is, I pray you recognize it as both a gift and a responsibility. Something already given, but also something you get to protect and nurture every single day.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just need to take the next step toward the life you know you’re meant to live. Protect your freedom by choosing wisely, by leaning into rhythms that bring peace, and by remembering that your ultimate freedom is already secure in Christ.
