3 Ways to Ease the Sunday Scaries and Reduce Monday Morning Anxiety
I thought the Sunday Scaries were only for people who went to work or school. I never thought I’d experience them as a stay at home mom. In our house, weekends are sacred. My husband works long hours outside the home during the week, so when the first morning of the weekend finally rolls around, everything naturally slows down. Coffee lasts longer (coffee in bed if we can!). Breakfast stretches into mid-morning and becomes more like brunch. We hang around at home, run errands together, visit with family, or just exist in the same space without a schedule breathing down our necks.
No one ever sat down and decided this was our weekend rhythm. It just happened. It’s our natural family rhythm.
And because of that, routines… slide. Toys migrate to all corners of the house. Dishes pile up in the sink. Laundry goes undone. We just focus on family time.
But the weekends always end.
And then I am standing in the kitchen, coffee in hand, already feeling behind before my week of parenting, homeschooling, and homemaking has even started. The clutter feels louder. My mind races faster. The Sunday Scaries creep in.
This post is for the mom who loves her weekends but hates how they leave her feeling.
If you’ve ever wished for a gentler transition from rest to responsibility, this Sunday night reset for overwhelmed moms might be exactly what you need.
In this post, I’m going to show you how to do a simple weekend reset that takes less than 30 minutes, happens after the kids are in bed, and helps you start the week feeling calmer and more grounded.
And if you’re already feeling deep in survival mode, I’ll also share my Weekly Rhythm Reset, a decision-making framework designed to reduce mental load.

Why Weekends Derail Routines (and why that’s okay)
If this is you too, here is a reminder that there is nothing wrong with how your weekends look.
Rest, connection, and unstructured time are not lack of discipline. You’re not lazy. They are often signs of intentional living. Many families rely on weekends as their only shared time, whether one or both parents work, and that matters. When I was working outside the home and my son was in daycare, our weekends were spent more doing cleaning and catching up on chores and errands than on family time. So being able to rest and recharge on the weekends, even if it leaves a little chaos on Monday morning, is a privilege I don’t take for granted.
But as thankful as I am for restful weekends, I need a system for when they end, because starting the week with clutter and chaos sits with me for the entire week and leaves me feeling behind.

The Sunday Night Reset for Overwhelmed Moms
This reset happens after the kids are in bed, when the house is quiet and no one needs you. I usually put on music or a podcast. It makes it so much more enjoyable.
Step 1: Walk through and clear visible clutter
The first step is a simple walk-through of the main living areas.
Don’t organize. Don’t declutter deeply. Just restore function.
That usually looks like:
- Putting toys back where they belong
- Clearing surfaces like tables and counters
- Folding throw blankets
- Putting dirty clothes in hampers
- Moving dishes to the sink
- Making the floor safe again so no one steps on painful toys in the dark or stubs their toe (happened to me one too many times)
This step alone makes the house feel visually calmer and takes way less time than we think.

Step 2: Run The Dishwasher and Do One Sink of Dishes
Next, I run the dishwasher and commit to one sink full of dishes, not all the loads.
On Sunday nights, I also like to toss in:
- Pet bowls
- Espresso machine parts
- Anything that gets skipped during the week
There is something deeply comforting about starting Monday with an empty sink and clean coffee tools. It’s a small thing, but it sets the tone for intentional living.

Step 3: Wipe Main Surfaces
The final step is a quick wipe down.
I focus on:
- Kitchen counters
- Coffee tables
- Bathroom counters
- Nightstands
Yes, even nightstands. Those little surfaces collect more visual noise than we realize.
This is a five-minute task that is probably the most important for bringing a sense of calm. Sometimes I’ll use a DIY spray, hot soapy water, or my favourite non-toxic multisurface spray from Eco-Kind Cleaning.
And when all three steps are done, it’s amazing how much the house feels quieter.

Why This Weekend Reset Works For Overwhelmed Moms
This Sunday night reset routine works because it:
- Reduces visual clutter, which many moms find mentally draining
- Restores basic function without requiring big decisions or huge chores
- Creates a clean starting point for the week, which is great for me because I don’t always do a nightly reset
It takes less than 30 minutes, but it shifts the emotional tone of the entire week.

If You’re Already In Survival Mode
If reading this feels overwhelming instead of helpful, that’s your sign that you don’t need another routine. You need fewer decisions.
That’s exactly why I created my Weekly Rhythm Reset, a gentle decision framework designed to help overwhelmed moms prioritize what actually needs to get done in the week ahead.
