How I reconnect with calm, energy, and faith every day as a busy mom
There are mornings when I wake up already feeling behind. The house is loud, the to-do list is long, and my mind feels scattered before my feet even hit the floor. As a mom, it’s so easy to slip into survival mode… rushing from one task to the next without ever pausing to fill our own cup.
For a long time, I thought I just needed to “push through.” But recently, and in the last few months especially, I’ve learned that I show up as my best self only when I stay consistent with a few simple wellness rhythms. These aren’t about perfection or strict routines (that is just counterproductive). They’re about reconnecting to who I am before the noise of the day begins.
These are only made possible (for me) when I get up before my boys. I set my alarm for 6:00 am (it used to be 7, but I swear they started waking up earlier when I started that 😅). I need at least an hour for these every morning. When I skip them, I feel it.
Instead of making my latte in the quiet, it’s accompanied by demands and things crashing to the floor (or heads bonking into tables… why do kids have literally zero chill?). I get flustered, foggy, and out of rhythm. My mind races faster and I snap at my boys way more. I become way more impulsive and I just overall feel like I have no footing.
But when I protect these small habits, I definitely feel like I glow more from the inside out.
These are the five wellness rhythms that help me feel grounded, steady, and present, even in busy seasons of motherhood.

1. Starting My Day with Stillness
Right after my hot oat milk latte is made, I sit in stillness. For me, that sometimes mean I open my devotional to the day’s date and literally just read, sit in quiet, and spend time with God. Even if it’s just 5 minutes. Some mornings are harder than others to do this, because maybe I am eager to get to the day’s work. But I have found devotions and quiet time with God require some discipline… because one skipped morning turns into two, turns into three, and before I know it a week has gone. And I know I won’t have a chance to do it another time during the day.
And honestly? I never regret putting this time first. The things I have been able to study and read have been so impactful on my spiritual and mental health and have strengthened my relationship with God — which has not always been that great. Sometimes reading one verse turns into an entire chapter and I feel like what I read was written specifically for me.
It really has been the most grounding and calming experience and I recommend it to anyone who already has a relationship with God, or is maybe just curious about what that’s like.

Here are the two things I bring out every morning — my Busy Mom’s Bible (I got mine on Amazon) and a simple Quiet Times with God devotional (also on Amazon!). Both are so easy to read (in simple language so that even tired moms can understand… essential!) and just bite sized little excerpts. You can read as much or as little as you want (or are able to that day). It takes the pressure off completely and has made what quiet time with God is meant to be… fulfilling and calming.
2. Supporting My Body In Simple Ways
Once the house starts to stir, I try to focus on some basic nourishment. For me, that usually means a cold glass of water with maybe some electrolytes or greens (check out my new favourite greens here!) mixed in. My favourite electrolytes are here. My kids and husband love these ones too, although I usually buy my boys the kids electrolytes here. It’s one of the easiest but most transformative habits I’ve ever added. Especially as a Canadian mom who juggles homeschooling, homemaking, and an business, I don’t always drink enough water during the day.

3. Creating a Calm Home Environment
Our environment matters more than we realize. Even the smallest sensory shifts can make a big impact.
Most mornings, I diffuse a comforting scent, open a window to let in sunshine and fresh air, and put on music to play in the background. When I diffuse oils like cinnamon and clove (like my absolute favourite blend from The Olfactory, a small business in Calgary, Alberta!), or citrus and mint, it instantly shifts the atmosphere in our home. I feel like it tells my brain, you’re safe, you’re home, you can breathe. I have two diffusers in the main areas in our home, one in the living room (this is one I like on Amazon) and a smaller on in the kitchen (here is my exact one here from Amazon, it’s actually a car diffuser but it fits perfectly on a windowsill!). I love to pause and take a deep breath and actually smell what I am diffusing that day.

I also recently discovered (or, rediscovered) how playing music affects your mood. I don’t think I listened to any music just for the sake of listening to music since 2016. Now I absolutely love having calming music on in our home or when I am driving whenever I get the chance. Check out my five favourite calming Spotify playlists here.
When the boys are up and busy and they don’t want “mommy’s music”, we love to use the Yoto (get yours here on Amazon). With cards easy enough to handle for tiny hands, they can choose their own music, stories, or educational content. I love how the pictures on the cards make the content easily recognizable and they can pick their favourites. We have used Yoto almost every single day for about a year and a half and it remains one of my favourite purchases for our intentional, screen free lifestyle.

4. Self-Care In The In-Between Moments
It sounds simple, but my skincare and oral care routine is one of the few moments that’s just for me. I’ve learned that when I take time to clean and freshen my mouth, and cleanse and moisturize my face, with clean products that make my skin and mouth feel amazing, it’s not just about skin health, it’s about sending myself the message that I matter, too. Because going through the day with a fresh feeling face and mouth just makes you feel so much better.
5. Sunshine, Fresh Air, and Gentle Movement
No matter how busy or cold it gets here in Canada, I try to get outside every day (or honestly just open a window to get fresh air and some sunshine touching my skin). Whether it’s a slow walk with my boys or letting them run in the yard while I sip a hot drink, the sunshine resets my mood instantly. I truly live for summer and always say I could live somewhere where it’s warm and sunny all year round, but here in Canada I have to take what I can get, which for half the year means sunshine in the cold. And on cloudy days or days where I don’t get the chance, I definitely rely on my vitamin D supports (read more on that here).

Protecting Your Peace (and Glow)
It’s taken me a long time to learn that wellness doesn’t mean complicated routines. I used to rely on strict routines and became more of a burden than anything. For me, true peace is built through small, consistent choices that align with who we are and what we value. It has to make you feel truly happy and at peace to be worth it… not just something someone told you to do.
For more tips on how to protect your glow, read this post here about staying off social media for your mental health. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself.
If you’ve been feeling scattered or disconnected, maybe it’s time to rebuild your own rhythm — one small habit at a time. I encourage you to find those things that ground you each day. What are they? I’d love to hear in the comments!
