Find Your Energy Again with Grounding Habits that Help You Move From Survival Mode to Thriving

When You Find Yourself In Survival Mode

We’ve all been there (I think…) You wake up one morning and realize that your wellness habits have slipped. You don’t remember the last time you did that thing you said you’d do every morning. You find yourself back into old habits, and you didn’t even realize you had started doing them again. Until you suddenly realize… you’re tired. You’re foggy. You’re bloated. You’re not your best self anymore.

Iโ€™ve been there. In fact, it happens more often than Iโ€™d like to admit. One week everything is flowing, my home feels peaceful, and Iโ€™m on top of my rhythms. The next, I find myself back in survival mode, grasping at quick fixes, and wondering how I lost track of what really matters.

In this blog post, Iโ€™m going to show you how to reset your wellness habits with simple daily rhythms. These are realistic practices for Canadian moms who juggle family, homemaking, business, and health, and who want to glow from the inside out.

My Recent Experience with Wellness Crashes (And How I Knew I Needed a Reset)

This summer, I was on cloud nine. My business was thriving, I was motivated, and my blog was taking off. My wedding was everything I could have dreamed of. After being cancelled in 2020 due to health restrictions, I was finally able to pull my dress and decorations out of storage and have my fairy tale day.

But in the weeks that followed, something shifted. Without a major event to focus on โ€” no last-minute decorations or dress fittings โ€” the pressure to perform vanished. And instead of feeling relieved, I feltโ€ฆ empty.

When the wedding tasks disappeared, itโ€™s like they took all my tasks with them. My social media, my business, my household chores โ€” I was like a deflated balloon.

I started spiraling. I planned out extensive renovations we could never afford. I mapped my four-year-oldโ€™s homeschool curriculum all the way through middle school. I located every shut-off valve and emergency exit in the house and packed an emergency go-bag. My sonโ€™s health struggles sent me down every rabbit hole, researching every pediatrician and naturopath I could find. I started redecorating random rooms, doing thrift hauls, and doing decluttering projects I didnโ€™t need to do.

My brain wasnโ€™t resting, it was grasping. Trying to build something. But instead of being productive, I was draining myself even more.

Slipping Out Of Wellness Mode And Into Survival Mode

Things I once prioritized began to slip. I stayed up later. I got lax about consuming dairy and sugar. Iโ€™m sure I forgot to take my GreenSynergy Elixir more than once. I stopped reaching out to friends and family. I stopped creating content. I stopped blogging.

My routine was unraveling, and I didnโ€™t even realize it until I felt completely out of control.
I was still functioning, but I wasnโ€™t nourishing. And I could feel it. But I couldnโ€™t stop it.

Why We Slip Into Survival Mode

Survival mode isnโ€™t always caused by something dramatic. It can sneak in quietly. For me, it often follows a big event or a busy season. My brain goes from hyper-focus to overstimulation, and the routines I normally rely on just slide away.

Maybe youโ€™ve felt the same. After a holiday, a work project, or even just a stressful week of parenting, your habits unravel and youโ€™re left with decision fatigue. Add in the endless noise of social media, world events, and constant digital stimulation, and no wonder our wellness feels off balance.

Returning to a Wellness Rhythm After Survival Mode

For me, coming back to wellness starts with something I call my Opening Shift. Just like opening a store sets the tone for the day, opening my home with a gentle rhythm grounds me. Some days, I am too exhausted to “close down the house” — and eventually, I learned that that was okay.

Hereโ€™s what my opening shift looks like most mornings:

  • A hot oat milk latte
  • Devotions, even just 5 minutes, to centre my heart
  • A few minutes of light content writing or blog journaling
  • A quick morning cleanup (kitchen reset, toys tidied, beds made)
  • Getting ready for the day with my dental care routine (read about that here!), skincare and a sometimes even a touch of tinted SPF

From there, the day may include errands, homeschooling, or just hanging in the backyard. But with this foundation, I feel anchored instead of scattered.

Taking Back Control of Your Mental Health

How did I take back control when I was spiralling? I started by removing the triggers.

That little โ€˜xโ€™ that says โ€œno longer interestedโ€? Use it. Or better yet, just stop scrolling. Read my post here about how I stopped using social media to reduce my anxiety and take back control of my life. The longer you scroll, the more the algorithm feeds you. And the more it feeds you, the harder it is to come back to real life.

Once I made that decision, my brain finally came back down to earth. I started to feel present again.

The 3 Ways to Start Your Own Reset

If youโ€™re ready to reset your wellness habits, start with these three steps.

  1. Choose a morning ritual that brings calm. (Coffee, reading, etc)
  2. Pick one space you can tidy daily to feel in control.
  3. Choose one nourishing food or supplement you can stick with (like greens and actually eating breakfast).

Over time, these anchors will pull you back into intentional living.

Gentle Momentum Over Perfection

There will be days where you donโ€™t feel like your best self โ€” physically, emotionally, or mentally. But choosing to show up anyway? Thatโ€™s the hardest, most powerful thing you can do for your wellness journey.

Some days will be hard. But honestly? Itโ€™s harder not to show up.

Do it tired. Do it anxious. Just do it. And find a wellness rhythm that works for you. Not what your friend does. Not what your favourite influencer swears by. Just you.

People think Iโ€™m weird for waking up to a messy kitchen. But in those seasons of overwhelm, doing the reset in the morning works.

Rhythm isnโ€™t about doing it all… itโ€™s about returning to what matters, one choice at a time.
