You donโt need more tools, you need the right ones.
If youโre a busy mom trying to grow a blog but feeling overwhelmed by all the tools, youโre not alone. From understanding what a plugin is, and how to choose the right ones for your WordPress.com site, it can be overwhelming. But the right ones actually simplify everything. This post walks you through my favourite WordPress plugins so you can grow your blog, increase traffic, and build income without adding more stress to your life.
In this post…
I remember sitting at my laptop early in the morning when I first started my blog, glancing at the clock knowing my precious morning blogging hour was coming to an end, and Googling โbest WordPress plugins”… and instantly feeling like I had opened a door to a hundred more decisions.
SEO. Security. Email. Analytics. Speed. Widgets and blocks. Feeds and other things I didn’t quite understand. Also, what even is a plugin?
It felt like I needed to become a tech expert overnight just to write a simple blog post.
Let me tell you, that is far from the truth. I have still been able to write posts and build my WordPress.com site, and even monetize it without needing to know the ins and outs of web design. And if I can do it, so can you!
What Changed With WordPress Plugins
Hereโs something that changed, and itโs kind of a big deal (it’s exciting for me and I’ve been blogging for almost a full year now): WordPress.com now includes plugins on all paid plans.
What used to require upgrades is now built into every paid plan. That makes it so much more accessible and less complicated to bloggers around the world.
That means you now have access to:
- SEO tools
- Monetization tools
- Automation tools
- And even more than you could even imagine
Without needing to upgrade your plan first. This is great for moms building blogs in between real life responsibilities… Because it removes one more feeling of being one step behind all the time.
It brings everything you need into one simple place.
What Is A Plugin?
As a non technical person, I will let others describe what a plugin is.
According to Lenovo, a plugin is “a software add-on that adds specific functionality to an existing computer program, web browser, or website without altering the core code”. In other words, an add on or extension of your original software.
A Reddit user describes it like this: “Plug ins are basically software not originally included with a product that you can add on to enhance the functionality of the product. They can be made by the original manufacturer or by third parties”.
WordPress Plugins vs Themes
Learn WordPress describes plugins as a package of code that can be installed on a WordPress.com website to add new features or functionality. Themes are used to control the look and feel of a WordPress.com website.
Think of it as themes = custom look, and plugins = custom functionality and features.
WordPress Plugins As Your Personal Support System
Plugins are like the support systems you have in your home. They’re the fancy new vacuum with the extra features that makes your life so much easier. You still do the vacuuming, but it’s easier and more functional.
Plugins are your systems behind the scenes.
They
- Help your posts get found
- Keep your site running smoothly
- Add new functions
- Protect your work
- Show you whatโs working
The Top WordPress Plugins (By Category)
You donโt need dozens of plugins. (Actually that will only slow down your site)
You need a few that each do one job really well. Focus on ones like Jetpack that do multiple jobs (see below).
Here are the only categories that truly matter when youโre building a blog that grows over time.
SEO Plugins
They help your blog show up on search engines when someone searches for something youโve written.
- Jetpack SEO – Optimize titles, meta descriptions, and social previews for better search results
- All In One SEO (AIOSEO)
- Really Simple SSL
Monetization Plugins
This is where your blog starts to feel like more than a hobby. Monetization plugins help you embed product widgets, manage affiliate links, set up ads properly, and add disclosures.
- Jetpack Creator – Make money each time someone visits your site by displaying ads on your posts and pages
- Affiliate Link Marker – Adds a * to every affiliate link
- FMTC Affiliate Disclosure – Adds a disclosure to the top of all blog posts
- WooCommerce – Monetize your site with an online store and accept payments
- SiteKit by Google – Google’s official WordPress plugin. Get this if you ever want to use Google Analytics, Search Console or monetize with AdSense
Functionality & Appearance Plugins
- Jetpack Blocks – Expand your editor with custom Jetpack blocks for rich content and layout options
- Jetpack Extra Sidebar Widgets – Add more widget options to your site, like social feeds, subscriptions, and more
- Jetpack Google Fonts – Customize your site’s typography with a selection of Google Fonts
- WP Post Author – Displaying author information, managing multiple authors and guest authors
- WP Popular Posts – Displays your most popular posts

Analytics Plugins
This is the category most moms skip, and itโs one of the most helpful. Analytics plugins show you what content is actually connecting: which posts people are reading and where your traffic is coming from.
- SiteKit by Google
- Jetpack Stats – See how your site is performing
- WP Statistics – An alternative to Google
Security & Anti-Spam Plugins
Because not worrying about spam, attacks and malware is a huge load off our full plates.
- Jetpack Scan – Protect your site from bad actors
Backup Plugins
Because your blog is not just content. It’s a reflection of who you are. Itโs your time, your ideas, your creativity. Making sure it’s backed up in a safe place is essential.
- Jetpack VaultPress – Save every change and get back online quickly
Sharing Plugins
- Jetpack Sharing – Add customizable share buttons so visitors can spread your content
- Jetpack Social – Share your WordPress content to multiple social media platforms
- Jetpack Newsletter – Transform your blog posts into newsletters
- Simple PinIt Button for Pinterest – Adds a customizable โPin itโ button over images so viewers can share on Pinterest
- Simple Social Icons – Display icons that link visitors to your various social profiles
Forms & Opt-In Plugins
- Kit (formerly ConvertKit) – Place forms, email opt-ins and landing pages on your site and grow your email list (and send newsletters from the same platform)
- Jetpack Forms – Add contact, registration, and feedback forms directly from the block editor
- WP Forms – Place forms and surveys on your site
Shopping & E-Commerce Plugins
- WooCommerce (plus Genesis Connect if using a Genesis Child Theme)
- Kit (formerly ConvertKit)
Donation/Gifts Plugins
- Jetpack Payment Button – The Donations Form block lets you accept credit and debit card payments for one-time donations, contributions, and tips
- Give WP – Create and manage fundraising campaigns
- Fundraising by WooCommerce – Fundraising and donor management system
- YITH Donations for WooCommerce – Allow donations on your site to ask your users for financial support
- Paymattic – Collect payments securely through Stripe, PayPal, and more
Coding Plugins
- WP Code – Add custom WordPress features through code snippets
- Ads.txt Manager – Create, manage, and validate your ads.txt and app-ads.txt from within WordPress
Speed & Caching Plugins
We live in a fast world. If your site loads slowly, people leave.
Performance plugins help speed up your site, compress images, and improve user experience.
- Jetpack Boost – Check and improve site performance for free
- Imagify – Images are automatically optimized when you upload them to WordPress
Why WordPress Plugins Matter So Much For Creators
As moms, we are already holding so much.
Schedules. Meals. Emotions. Homes. Relationships.
So when you sit down to work on your blog, you donโt need more decisions. You need less.
The right plugins give you:
- Fewer decisions to make
- Less time wasted figuring things out
- Safety you can rely on
- More growth over time
They create a rhythm in your blog the same way routines create rhythm in your home.
Where To Begin With WordPress Plugins (No Overwhelm)
This extensive list of plugins can definitely be overwhelming. I don’t use all of them, they are just a collection of ones I personally use and that come highly recommended by others. But just start with 2-3 at a time. See how they work with your site. Start with one like Jetpack that does multiple jobs at once. As your blog grows, slowly add in more.
And if you want ongoing support, encouragement, and simple strategies that fit into motherhood, Iโd love to have you inside my email list. I share:
- Blog growth tips
- Wellness rhythms
- Homemaking systems
- Exclusive discounts and freebies
All in a way that feels calm and doable.
You donโt need to build your blog perfectly. Just like you don’t have to manage your home perfectly.
You donโt need to understand everything today. You just need to take the next step. One step at a time.
