If you are a busy mom and wondering, “Why does feeding my kids feel nonstop and exhausting??“, you are not alone. And if you’re tired of reaching for packaged snacks whenever your toddler is hungry, keep reading. Here I will share 21+ easy, stress free snack ideas for feeding our picky kids.
When I was thrifting the other week, I came across what I thought was the “miracle book”: Quick and Easy Kid Friendly Recipes. It was an immediate purchase, of course. But flipping through it, I was disappointed. All it contained was smaller portions of adult meals. COBB salad. Frittatas. Broccoli and potato soup. Asian shrimp. And more…
As a mom of a picky eater, that just wasn’t the right fit for us. I wrote more about my experience feeding my picky eater, what I learned along the way, and the strategies that finally worked for us in this blog post here. What I needed was a collection of snacks I knew would be eaten without the stress of flipping through cookbooks that were 80% “wrong” and without googling every single time my kids said “I’m hungry!” and I reached for the store bought, packaged snacks again.
In this post…
Plan ahead with this Weekly Meal Planner (With Shopping List) and prepare these ahead of time when you are having a high capacity moment and take one decision off your plate for the upcoming week in those moments of stress.
No-Bake Snack Ideas You Can Make Fast
These snacks are fast, no bake, and refrigerator or freezer friendly. I love these recipes because they are completely customizable! Use your pick of nuts (cashew, almonds, hazelnuts), cereals (Cheerios, bran, Rice Krispies, or a healthier blend like Kashi Puffs), sweeteners (honey, maple syrup, agave), and add-ons (chocolate chips, M&Ms, chia seeds). It works both for variety to keep their interest or for picky kids who decide one day they don’t like something they seemed to love yesterday (all too relatable).
What you’ll need for these no-bake snacks for kids:
- Mixing bowl
- Measuring spoons
- Wooden spoon
- Baking tray (or flat surface)
- Parchment paper
Here are my 3 favourite no-bake recipes that are easy, fast, high in protein, and totally customizable:
- Homemade Oatmeal Energy Bites (Great for Busy Moms)
- Healthy Date Energy Balls for Kids
- No-Bake Honey Nut Cheerios Snack Bars
Muffins And Baked Snack Ideas to Batch Ahead
These are the best because you can make double batches and fill your freezer full of healthy baked snacks for your kids (or husband! ๐). I love baking, but let’s be real it is time consuming. So for a while, I resorted to packaged, store bought snacks. But I knew I could do better than the snacks filled with sugar, palm oils, dyes, and preservatives. So I gathered a collection of simple recipes I can make once a week and feel a little more peaceful.
What you’ll need for these easy baked snacks for kids (I linked my faves on Amazon):
- Mixing bowl or stand mixer
- Measuring spoons
- Wooden spoon or whisk
- Baking sheets, loaf pans or muffin tins
Here are my favourite baked snacks for kids that I keep on rotation:
- Easy Homemade Bread (No Sourdough)
- Kid Friendly Applesauce Muffins
- Healthy Banana Muffins for Kids
- Copycat Costco Heavenly Hunks
- Healthy Banana Bread for Kids
- High Fiber Cereal Snack Bars (Nut-Free and No-Bake)
- Cheese Rolls (3 Ingredients)
Freezer Friendly Snack Ideas for Busy Weeks
Everybody loves a good freezer snack, especially once the weather warms up (read about how to have a low stress summer at home with your kids here).
What you’ll need for these freezer snacks:
- Mixing bowl, measuring spoons, whisk and frying pan (for the pancakes)
- Baking dish
- Wide cup or cookie cutters (or Uncrustables molds here — just $12!)
- Popsicle sticks and/or popsicle mold
Here are
- Yogurt Bark with Berries
- Mini Pancakes for Kids (With Fruit)
- Homemade Uncrustables (use this homemade bread recipe for an extra loving touch!)
- Easy Frozen Creamsicle Yogurt Bites
- Homemade Popsicles (Use cute popsicle molds and your favourite low sugar juice option! I love to sneak in this sneaky boost vitamin for extra nutrition, or these electrolytes for added hydration in the hotter months, but that is my personal perspective. Use code BRYANA25 to save.)
Right-Out-Of-The-Fridge Snacks for Low Energy Moments
These are of course the simplest kid-friendly snacks that you can pull out of your fridge on demand. I still like to prepare these ahead of time for ease (I love these glass food storage containers for this! Normally I use stainless steel, but sometimes I like to see what’s inside without bringing a million containers out and opening them, without having to use plastic).
To make these “boring” snacks more interesting for kids, I like to use pretzels as toothpicks or cute cookie cutters to make them interesting shapes. I will link these cute ones from Amazon here!
- Ham and cheese roll ups, or simply cheese and crackers
- Freshly chopped fruit or vegetables (try pretzel toothpicks or putting them on a cute kebab!)
- Buttered bread
- Chopped up chicken breast
- Hard boiled eggs
How To Make This Work In Real Life
We’ve all saved all the Pinterest recipes and bookmarked all the blogs to “check again later”, but how often do we actually follow through? My rate definitely isn’t high. If you want this to actually work in real life, donโt just save recipes. Plan your snacks into your week so youโre not trying to decide 15 times a day and remember which ingredients you have… which is the real source of our exhaustion… not just having to make the snacks.
